Explore our accessible park features, including a 1-mile All Abilities loop trail with a hard surface boardwalk, an accessible pier overlooking Mallard Lake, and an observation blind under expansion. Operation Recon Nature
Veterans from all service branches – Active Duty, Reserve, and Retired personnel are invited to attend monthly walks at Wehr Nature Center. For approximately one to one and a half hours, we will travel on the trails of Wehr Nature Center to share camaraderie and experience seasonal nature happenings.
Meet the Turkeys
One bird’s mess is another bird’s meal! Wehr’s Wild Turkeys will gladly clean up the stray seed thrown to the ground by busy birds at the feeders. It’s quite a sight to find cardinals, doves, and sparrows eating right alongside these giant turkeys.

Meet Mary Gease
Mary Gease has been volunteering at Wehr for 44 years. Mary shared these memories and stories in interviews in 2014 and 2023.
“I also got involved with the Bulldozer Alert volunteers who went each Thursday to rescue wildflowers that were going to be destroyed during construction projects. We transplanted them to Wehr and I even got to take some home.”
Eastern Red Bats are a beautiful bat that can be found in Wisconsin. Males are a bright orange or red while females are a slightly more frosted shade of red. That red color may seem conspicuous but allows the Eastern Red Bat to blend perfectly into foliage and they may resemble a dead leaf or even a pinecone when they are roosting. Mama Eastern Red Bats are the only bat with four teats. Most bats have only a single baby, but the Eastern Red Bat gives birth to 2-4 babies in early summer. There is a total of 30 Asters known for Wisconsin. Asters and species of Goldenrod are most likely the main flowering plants that you will see in bloom at Wehr Nature Center right now.Many of our native asters grow in woodland understories or edges. Most flower in late summer and fall which make asters an important source of nectar and pollen for pollinators such as bees (like the one native bee on the flower in the photo), hoverflies, and butterflies during this time of year. These flowers are also a larval host to Pearl Crescent and checkerspot butterflies.
